Footpaths
and Fables
Within this project I explored the preservation of traditional narrative, focusing on the rich tapestry of folklore that surrounds the Northeast of Scotland. The aim is not only to highlight the unique beauty and relevance of these tales and legends but to promote their reintroduction into the area. Footpaths and Fables is an interactive walking trail that teaches visitors of eight carefully selected folktales from around the Northeast, through storytelling stops, augmented reality experiences and the doric tongue.
Storytelling Signs
The interpretation and wayfinding signs are inspired by the vast collection of Pictish standing stones found throughout the Northeast. The signs are constructed from Corten steel, a weathered material that blends harmoniously with the natural landscape while offering exceptional durability against the region’s harsh weather conditions. The interpretation panels themselves will be printed on powder-coated aluminium and finished with a UV-protective wrap to ensure longevity and resistance to weathering. Each panel has both the English and Doric translation of the story to aid in the preservation of the dialect.

Ar Experiences
To introduce a modern twist to the storytelling experience, each interpretation panel is enhanced with an augmented reality (AR) feature that deepens understanding and broadens accessibility for diverse audiences. This digital element brings the historical narratives to life by depicting a key scene or symbolic aspect of each story in an immersive, interactive format. Visitors can access the AR content using any smartphone or tablet with a camera, allowing them to engage with the site in a more dynamic and memorable way.

The Trail
The adventure begins at the iconic Crathes castle, a 16th century tower house that stands against a backdrop of rolling hills. Following the map found on the back of the guidebook and the Footpaths and Fables way markers, the trail take visitors through a variety of countryside and woodland views, surrounded by native wildlife and fauna.
